"Summon Your Future" Teen Program Letter
An open letter to directors of "at-risk" teen programs
Nov 2, 2006 --

Dear "At-Risk" Teen Program Director--

Please help me reach “out of place” teens with the kind of books that changed my life.

I’m Gail Martin, author of The Summoner, a new fantasy adventure novel, and the first book in the Chronicles of the Necromancer series.  Reading science fiction and fantasy changed my life as a teen, and now as an author, I would like to ask your help to reach other teens who believe they are too “different” to fit in.

Being a teenager is hard.  For some kids, it’s harder than for others.  Maybe it’s a girl in a small town where girls aren’t supposed to be smart.  Maybe it’s a boy who would rather read than play football.  Being “out of place” is that harder in the years before you can do anything about it.

I was one of those “out of place” teens.  One of the things that got me through, that made the difference in my ability to survive, was discovering science fiction and fantasy.  In science fiction, the main character is usually painfully different at the beginning—and that difference ends up saving the world.

I want to get that message across to other teens who are where I was, to tell them that the difference that makes them feel out of place now just might be what saves the world.

I’m on tour right now with The Summoner, and when I do book signings, I ask readers to bring their used science fiction and fantasy books to donate.  In each city, I try to find programs that work with out-of-place older teens and young adults, and donate the books to give others the lifeline that mattered so much to me.

Please consider accepting some of these used science fiction and fantasy books to give hope to “out of place” teens.  You’ll receive recognition in my press releases and on my web site.

But more than that, you might make a difference in a teen’s life.  One book changed mine.

To  confirm your participation, please call me at 704-595-9581, or email gail@ChroniclesOfTheNecromancer.com.  Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Gail Martin
