Greetings from Arizona!
March 8, 2008
This weekend I'm the guest author at the Arizona Renaissance Festival just outside Phoenix in the beautiful Superstition Mountains--isn't that an appropriate setting? Anyhow, I'll be blogging every day from the festival, and maybe even upload some photos if the internet connection cooperates! If you're in the area, please stop by--I'll be by the gift shop on and off all day on Saturday/Sunday March 8 - 9. So much is going on! I'm on the third edit of the manuscript for Dark Haven, which is coming along nicely, with a few twists that even surprised me! Had a lot of fun at a reading/signing at Malaprop's bookstore in Asheville NC a few weeks back. I was one of three speculative fiction authors (Philip Nero and David Talon were the others), and we had a great time. Downtown Asheville was really busy that night with a game and a concert, and we all had challenges parking. Which, given three sci fi authors, led to conjecture given the time travel in Phil's novel about what would happen if you went either forward or backward in time to snag a parking place. Of course, things could get dire if we accidently met ourselves coming back out to the car. We had to laugh at ourselves--put three sci fi authors together and we invent paradox parking! I hope you've been checking out the Ghost in the Machine podcasts. This month author Paul Kearney (Sea Beggars, Monarchies of God, The Ten Thousand) and I get to chat about everything from civil war re-enacting to battle techniques throughout history and other fun stuff. Pamela Cable is also one of my guests. She's not technically sci fi/fantasy, but she writes a great Southern ghost story (for some reason, ghosts just don't seem to stay buried down here). So we talk about ghosts, the dark side of religion and go from there. Ghost in the Machine is also now available free through iTunes, and you can get the web audio for new and archived sessions on www.ChroniclesOfTheNecromancer.com Speaking of which...many of my podcast guests will be making guest appearances on my blog, and I'll be returning the favor. I hope you caught Tony Ruggiero's recent appearance--he writes about aliens, conspiracy and military intelligence (yeah, right). I asked Tony for a few words for the blog, and here he is... "It was great to talk with Gail on her Ghost in the Machine podcast: http://gzmartin.audioacrobat.com/rss/gailzmartinpodcast.xml When we got into the discussion about the conspiracy concept—I knew we had hit some pretty significant common ground. Conspiracy is pretty much in all of my writings as well. I sometimes ask myself why that is and I think that like myself, many others are really into the drama aspect of someone else trying to take control of something or someone. It's probably one of the top fears that a person might have—the loss of control and what that does to our ability to make rational decisions. My vampire series is based upon the conspiracy of theU.S. military and its use of vampires as a hit squad…think Anne Rice and Tom Clancy… and my science fiction of Alien Deception and Alien Revelation is about the American political system being controlled by an alien race. Conspiracy runs rampant in both story lines and in many cases there are two types: the traditionally bad guys of conspiracy and the perhaps not so bad guys of a secondary conspiracy which involves the choice of the lesser of two evils which is always entertaining. In my mind, conspiracy is basically the left handed cousin of conflict. And as Gail put it, conspiracy theories keep us guessing about the real motives of characters. I agree and without them…well we would probably be out of the writing biz...and looking over our shoulder more often. Tony Ruggiero, Author of the Team of Darkness Declassified Files www.tonyruggiero.com" See ya at the Arizona Renaissance Festival! Gail
