The news from DragonCon

September 5, 2007

DragonCon was amazing! I took the family down to Atlanta
for the weekend and we hung out with 40,000 SF/F fans for
an amazing weekend. Fabulous costumes, great speakers on
just about anything imaginable that has to do with SF/F,
and time to connect with friends old and new.

I knew DragonCon emphasized costuming, but nothing prepared
me for the amazing costumes I saw. True, theater-quality
costumes that people really poured their hearts, souls,
creativity (and wallets) into creating! Plenty of super
heroes and Trek/Battlestar/Star Wars folks, plus an amazing
number of very realistic costumes from the world of Harry
Potter—including a spectacular Snape, Sirius, McGonagle and
Lucius Malfoy. Even with a whole weekend, there wasn’t
nearly enough time for all the art, the dealers room, the
filk and concerts—we’ll just have to go back next year!

It was great to spend time with the Solaris crew—Mark
Newton and Christian Dunn came over for the con from the
UK. Caught up with old friends Dave Drake, James Maxey,
Gina Farago, Chris Jackson, Tony Ruggiero, Ruth Thompson
and Angela Knight, and made some new friends in Mike Lee
(Black Library) and Alethea Kontis (who just did a great
edit on The Blood King manuscript). Connecting with people
is the best part of any con!

If you’re in the Carolinas area, I will be at the Carolina
Renaissance Festival on two weekends—Oct. 21-22 and 28-29.
I’ll be signing at the front gift shop. Please stop in!
I’ll also be at the Novello Festival of Reading in
Charlotte on October 17, so please come if you can and tell
your friends! I will also be in Winston-Salem on Nov. 1.
I’m speaking at the eWomenNetwork program at lunch, then
doing signings at both the Borders and the Barnes & Noble
in the afternoon and early evening.

Enjoy the last best days of summer!
